Actinic keratoses are considered precursors to squamous cell carcinoma. It is estimated that about 1 in 6 of theses lesions if left untreated will progress to full blown squamous cell carcinoma. These lesions are identified by a persistent roughness to the skin. Actinic keratoses can often be felt more readily than visualized. Treatment options for actinic keratoses are numerous and include cryotherapy (using cold thermal injury to destroy atypical cells), photodynamic therapy, topical agents (Efudex, Aldara, and Carac), laser treatments, or chemical peels. Many, but not all, actinic keratosis treatment modalities are covered by insurance. Laser treatment, chemical peels, and photodynamic therapy provide rejuvenation benefits as well as medical benefits and therefore are considered “cosmetic” treatments and are not covered by insurance.
